The processes involved in the production, processing and packaging of food are becoming increasingly industrialized and automated all over the world. This resulted in continuous growth in demand for food processing and packaging machines in recent years and this demand in going to continue.
With an output volume of Euro 9.3 billion in 2006 a plus of 7,1 % in comparison to 2005 the food processing and packaging machinery industry is one of the largest branches of the German mechanical engineering sector. The German food processing and packaging industry covers around 650 companies with a total of 56,600 employees.
Food processing machines include meat processing machines, confectionery machines, bakery machines, beverage production machines, dairy machines, fruit and vegetable processing machines, equipment for the production of basic foodstuffs and animal fodder.
In 2006 food processing machines generated an output volume of 2.8 billion Euro. Largest segments within the processing machines are meat processing machines (700 million Euro), machines for the processing vegetable raw material (594 million Euro), bakery machines (385 million Euro) and beverage production machines (409 million Euro).
At the end of the manufacturing process it is the turn of the packaging technology. Packaging doesn’t only play an important role in the food industry, of course. It is also used in the cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and building materials industry, and throughout the consumer goods sector.
The German packaging machinery industry has systematically extended its leading position in the last few years. In 2005 the production rose by almost 2,3 % to approximately Euro 4.23 billion, there of 1.27 billion Euro of packaging machines for beverages.
Export business is the growth motor of our industry. In 2005 the export volume of food processing an packaging machines reached 5.8 billion Euro. The export ratio is equivalent to more than 80 % and is well above that of the total mechanical engineering sector at 64 %.
