German printing and paper technology - a market leader through innovation

The numerous manufacturers of machinery, plants and equipment for media prepress, printing, print finishing, paper making, paper finishing and paper converting represent one of the most important and most innovative branches of the German machinery and plant manufacturing industry. In Germany, printing and paper machinery worth 8700 million Euro was produced in 2006.

Exporting top quality technology with great success

With an export share of 84%, printing and paper converting technology is one of the top exporting branches of the German machinery and plant manufacturing

industry. In total, German companies exported machinery, plants and supplies for the printing, paper and paper converting industry worth nearly 7300 million Euro to more than 170 countries.

The most important markets for printing and paper technology are located in West Europe, North America and – increasingly – in Asia. 38% of total exports went to the countries of the European Union, the "domestic market", followed by Asia with 25% and North America with 16.3%. The buying countries are headed by the USA with a share of about 15% in 2006, followed by China (including Hong Kong) with 10,5% and Italy with 7.3%. So China has solidly established itself among the most important sales markets. This strong position underlines the role of the German suppliers as a technological leader on the world market.

World market position

Due to the strong international competitiveness of this industry, German printing and paper technology is in the lead with regard to production and exports world-wide. As suppliers of investment goods for printing, paper converting and paper making, the German manufacturers are world-market leaders and/or among the top five. This is reflected by the world market shares.

The world exports of the 43 most important industrial nations regarding printing and paper technology have risen by nearly 30 % to a volume of 21,000 million over the last 10 years. Irrespective of the currency relations and price changes forming the basis of these calculations, these figures are backed by a strong growth of the real trade volume with investment goods for the printing, paper converting and paper making industry. All the signs are that this positive development will continue in the coming years – though less dynamically due to the political events and with more setbacks than till now.

Thanks to the innovative technology they offer, the German suppliers of printing and paper technology have not only been able to maintain, but even to strengthen their international top position in this overstretched economic situation. This is confirmed by the share in world exports which is 33 % and thus top of the list in machinery manufacturing. Seen in the context of an increasing globalisation in printing and paper technologies, world export figures are far from showing the real market share of many German companies. Many companies manufacture outside Germany and export from there to specific regions or countries so that their share in the world market is partly much higher.

Being the most important suppliers for the international printing and paper industry, German machinery manufacturers are offering innovative means of production which help their customers to remain successful in the future media competition.
